The Curse of Two Last Names

The sun along the Mediterranean coast

doesn’t reach this far.

Hasn’t for some time

possibly never has, what are the chances?

A complete inversion of the earth’s axis.

Or have we been guilty all along

of being further away than even here,

stepping back when never closer than.

Thankfully there is a paper record

obtainable in duplicate colors

and many stipulatory variations

of why this has to be,

this fear of failing miserably

Colin James has a book of poems, Resisting Probability, from Sagging Meniscus Press. He lives in Massachusetts.
